Arts, a tool for life
Some may think art as a simple intention of an artist to express himself/herself, some others consider international recognition as the artists´ raison d’être.
Cuban artist Kcho uses art as a tool for life, and by having his studio in Romerillo neighborhood he has brought art to a community deprived of it. Not only he has built a huge compound featuring galleries, workshops, a theater, a library and plenty of open spaces for creation, but he has undertaken a sort of artistic intervention in the community, scattering works by Spencer Tunick, Andy Warlhol, Amelia Peláez and Mariano Rodríguez across parks, bus stops, grocery stores and living rooms of common people’s houses.
The fact that none of these works has been stolen or damaged is evidence enough of the transformational positive impact of this initiative. As Kcho himself is used to saying: “people respond to respect with more respect”.

The improbable route to El Jíbaro
Someone said that cooking is like love and it seems that was the case for Diana Figueroa and David Roque. Besides sharing their lives and degrees in Nuclear Physics and Economic degrees, they shared a passion for culinary art and from that passion “El Jíbaro” restaurant was born.
Meet the owners of one of the most popular entrepreneurial projects in recent years and discuss their vision that is actually surpassing the walls of the restaurant and touching their community in the heart of Havana.

The world of tobacco
The famous American writer Mark Twain once said: “If I can’t smoke cigars in heaven, I’m not going”. That special a pleasure smoking a cigar is. The elaboration of the best cigars is a complex process that begins in the region of Vueltabajo, the land of the best tobacco in the world. Today you will visit that blessed land and will learn from the experts how to roll a good puro. Early in the morning, depart from Havana to Finca Quemado del Rubi, owned by Hector Luis and considered one of the top three tobacco farms in Cuba. Still very young, Mr. Luis’ outstanding production won him the prestigious Hombre Habano award. Depending on the season, you will be able to appreciate some of the various stages the plant goes thorugh: growing, harvest or drying. Also, you will learn about the different types of leaves and cigars. Continue to Pinar del Rio city to visit a cigar factory where dozens of torcedores artfully mix multiple layers of leaves to produce the Habanos. Next, head for Viñales to appreciate one of the most beautiful landscapes in Cuba. Stop at the lookout point of the Hotel Los Jazmines for a spectacular view of the typical Mogotes, limestone outcrops that are home to endemic species, caves and underground rivers. Appreciate this unique natural scenery form another angle during your lunch at La Finca Agroecologica. A sustainable project turned into a restaurant, here you can enjoy typical Cuban dishes made with excellent organic products. Relax rocking on a hammock while indulging your sight with the view of the Valley of Silence. After a short tour of the town of Viñales, return to Havana.
Important: Tobacco factories are closed to regular visitors on holidays, weekends, during company holidays, and during the tobacco festival. Sometimes they are also closed on other days without prior notice. Caribbean Tours AG cannot guarantee that a factory is open. Leaving behind the paradise of the "Cayos", the way leads through Jaronú, a small town that was once one of the exponents of the glorious era of sugar in Cuba. Formerly the largest mill of the 19th century in the country can be found here and houses that are all the same and living witnesses of the past, with an impeccable almost intact architecture. The route continues to Camagüey, known as the city of jars in Spanish "Tinajones", a city that was built with asymmetrical streets that get tangled up and end unexpectedly. This very particular structure was conceived in this way to confuse the pirates who frequently looted the town. Walking through the city center and through its tangled alleys is a pleasant pastime. (B/D)
Accommodation with breakfast and dinner: Casa Particular, e.g. Hostal San Rafael or similar, Camagüey
In the morning you will depart for the city of Bayamo, located in the eastern province of Granma. Cuba's national anthem was written at this city, also famous for its horse-drawn carriages, something that is still preserved as a reminder of colonial traditions. Then, a short tour about the nation´s origin among its central park. On the way to Santiago, the tour will take a short detour to visit the most sacred site in Cuba: La Basílica de la Caridad del Cobre. Cachita, popularly known as the patron saint of Cuba, has been the object of adoration by many Cubans, poor as well as rich. In the church you can learn about the stories of famous stars and athletes who dedicated their triumphs to her. Begin your day at Loma de la Cruz for a panoramic view of the city of Holguin, the “City of Parks”, which is home to popular festivities like Romerías de Mayo. Continue to Bayamo, second villa founded by the Spanish and first to be free from its colonial founders. This historic city is the cradle of the Cuban nationality. Visit the Plaza del Himno (Anthem Square), where the national anthem was sung for the first time just after the Cuban troops took the city from the Spanish territorial army. Enjoy a tour on a typical horse-drawn carriage, a mode of transportation largely used by locals. Proceed to Santo Domingo, a small town at the border of Turquino National Park.

Today, set out on a jeep excursion Alto del Naranjo, followed by a 4 km trek to Fidel Castro’s headquarters up until the triumph of the Cuban revolution. At the beginning of the year 1958, Fidel decides to establish this operation base out of reach from Batista’s forces. La Plata turned out to be the ideal place as it was hardly accessible and the few inhabitants in the village were supportive farmers who were loyal to the revolutionary movement. Also, the various facilities built were sheltered under the trees, which prevented them from being recognized from the air, hence stopping the otherwise constant airstrikes. A guide will take you through the compound, showing personal objects of Fidel Castro that are preserved in the premises of the Comandancia. Lunch at the house of a local farmer. Return to your hotel. Rest of the afternoon at leisure to walk in the nature.

Early in the morning, head for Manzanillo. In the early 20th century, the órgano oriental became very popular in this town. This is a musical instrument very similar to the French organ, which was adapted to play Cuban traditional music. Ever since, it has been a staple in popular festivities in the eastern region and was recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Cuba Nation in 2017. Continue for a visit to La Demajagua, former sugar mill property of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who freed his slaves the 10th of October, 1868, initiating the struggle for Cuba’s independence.
Included meals today: breakfast, all inclusive
Included services: Visit to the historical museum "La Demajagua”

Today’s program is one of the highlights of the tour. It is recommended to bring a sandwich, fruits and water from the hotel before leaving for Santiago de Cuba, as there are very scarce food options along the away. The journey though is a true visual spectacle and there are parts where the road is the only separation between the Sierra Maestra and the Caribbean Sea. Get your camera ready to capture the unique perspective of the mountains, women washing clothes in the river and hardly holding bridges. Enjoy the feeling of remoteness for long stretches and the close sight of the Pico Turquino, the highest elevation in Cuba. In the afternoon, arrive at Santiago de Cuba.

1 Tobacco factories are closed for regular visitors on public holidays, on Sundays, during the company holidays and the tobacco festival. They can also close on other days, without being announced beforehand. Caribbean Tours cannot guarantee that the factories are open. If closed, we will offer a replacement program (e.g. visit in Santa Clara´s tobacco factory).
After breakfast, head east onto the national highway towards central Cuba. Arrive at Santa Clara, the historic city where the Argentinian “guerrillero Che” Guevara secured an important victory that effectively determined the triumph of the revolution. The decisive action entailed the derailment of an armoured military train in December 1958. Visit the Mausoleum2 where his body, found in Bolivia in 1997, was put to rest. Finally, visit Vidal Park, cultural centre of the city, and the restored Teatro la Caridad. The rest of the afternoon will be free for leisure activities. (B/D)
Overnight stay with breakfast and dinner included: Hotel E Central (3*) or similar, Santa Clara
2 The Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and may close on other days without prior notice. Caribbean Tours does not guarantee opening hours. However, the monumental memorial itself, with the imposing statue of Che, is worth a visit in itself.
Early morning departure to the colonial city of Santi Spíritus, founded in the 16th century. Upon arrival, visit the Yayabo Bridge, a time-defying symbol of the colonial city. Stroll along the beautiful boulevard and the city’s colourful streets. Continue to Camaguey, the city of the Tinajones (clay jugs). Founded in 1514, Camaguey was target of frequent pirate attacks, so the city was built with narrow streets and labyrinthine alleyways to disorient the invaders. Finally, enjoy an interesting tour on a bicitaxi through the most important plazas of the city. (B)
Overnight stay with breakfast: Hotel E Santa María (3,5*) or similar, Camagüey
Holguin is dubbed the city of parks in Cuba. With a lively cultural life, it is known for its many festivals, such as Las Romerías de Mayo, which take over the streets and “plazas” every year. Today you will discover the city in and out. Ascend to the iconic Loma de la Cruz for a spectacular panoramic view. Continue to the small fishing town of Gibara, located on the northern coast, well off the typical tourist path. Enjoy the absolute serenity, which is only interrupted annually by the Gibara International Film Festival. Afternoon at leisure to walk the town and meet its people. (B/D)
Overnight stay with breakfast and dinner included: Hotel Ordoño (3*) or similar, Gibara
Early morning departure in direction of Finca Manacas, in Birán. Birthplace of Fidel Castro, it has been only a few years since this place opened to the public. The tour of the old estate will offer interesting insights into the life of the Cuban leader. Head for Baracoa via Moa, famous for its nickel, along a bumpy coastal road. Turn onto the embankment that borders the Alejandro de Humboldt Natural Park. This whole area is rich in endemic species, including the smallest bird and frog in the world. It also offers beautiful landscapes, exotic bays, huge rivers and high mountains. Finally, arrive at Baracoa, the first town founded in Cuba. Columbus set foot here in 1492, leaving the first catholic symbol in the New World, the vine cross. Rest of the day at leisure. (B/L)

More than one celebrity has commended to “Cachita”, as the Virgin is commonly known. Continue to the historic city of Bayamo. Famous for its horse-drawn carriages, it is here that the struggle for the independence from Spain began. Bayamo is also where the national anthem was composed and sang for the first time; fittingly it goes by the name of “La Bayamesa”. This area is made up of karst lagoons and an extensive system of underwater caves that are inhabited by various species of the region's diverse flora and fauna. Visit the municipal museum: Palacio Cantero2 and later, enjoy a refreshing cocktail while relaxing on the terrace of a private restaurant that is housed in a colonial mansion. Enjoy the nightlife scene by listening to traditional music and dancing with the locals. This can be done by visiting the Casa de la Trova or the Casa de la Música near the main square. (B/L)
Overnight stay with breakfast: Hotel depending on travel type.
1 Cigar factories are closed in the afternoon, on Saturdays and Sundays, on public holidays, during plant closure and during the festival of cigars. Sometimes the factories are closed any other day without prior notice. In case the cigar factory cannot be visited Caribbean Tours will try to arrange an alternative program.
2 If the city museum is closed another one will be visited.
After breakfast enjoy a scenic drive over the Escambray mountain range and visit the Sugar Mills Valley “Valle de los Ingenios”, where the remains of small 19th century sugar mills, warehouses, milling machinery, slave quarters and manor houses can still be found. Visit the hacienda Iznaga home of the former sugar baron Iznaga. While in the estate lookout for the legendary Torre Manaca3. Afterwards, continue towards the center of the island to the historic city of Santa Clara where Che Guevara gained his most important victory. While in Santa Clara, visit the Che Guevara mausoleum4. Later, drive to the small colonial town of Remedios and visit the former sugar factory that is on the road between Remedios and Caibarién. Today, it is a museum dedicated to the subject of Cuba’s sugar industry. Not only will you gain broad insight into how sugar is manufactured. You will also get a chance to inspect several steam locomotives that are still in very good condition. This is must-see for all railway enthusiasts. Afterwards, stroll over the idyllic main square towards the historic San Juan Bautista church, witness of countless parrandas. (Parrandas = a kind of carnival parade traditionally held at Christmas in the form of a fireworks festival). (B)

3 Climb the tower at your own risk.
4 The mausoleum of Che Guevara is closed on Mondays and can be closed on other days without prior notice. Caribbean Tours assumes no guarantee for the opening times. However, the monumental memorial itself with an imposing statue of Che is worth a visit.
In the morning head towards Havana with a short stop on the way. If there are participants on the tour who have booked a beach extension in Varadero, they will first be transferred to their beach hotel in Varadero and then the drive continues to Havana. The drive from Remedios to Varadero takes about 4 hours and from Remedios to Havana (on the direct way without stop in Varadero) about 5 ½-6 hours. (B)
Please note: Due to the duration of the trip (Remedios - Varadero - Havana) timely connection to an international return flight cannot be guaranteed. For travelers who have a flight on the same day the tour ends, we suggest reserving a private transfer from Remedios to the airport in Havana.
5 The specified number of km is the indication for the direct way to Havana. Via Varadero the mileage is about 480 km.
