When Travel Builds Something That Lasts
One house will not change Cuba. But it can change one person's life.
When Travel Builds Something That Lasts
One house will not change Cuba. But it can change one person's life.

When Travel Builds Something That Lasts
There are journeys that end when we return home. And then there are journeys that leave something behind.
In El Rosario, Pinar del Río, a woman had been living under a makeshift roof that offered very little protection from the elements. When it rained, water came into the house. The old structure also allowed rats to enter, making everyday life even more difficult.
Last year, travelers and travel partners came together through a fundraising initiative supported by our clients at Be Somewhere Sunny, with a simple goal: to replace the unsafe roof and create a safer, drier place to live.
Today, that goal has become reality.
“
Sometimes, a roof
is more than a roof.
It is safety.
It is dignity.
It is home.
“
The greatest gift donors
gave was hope:
giving the affected family
the strength
and motivation
to rebuild their lives.

A Small Change. A Lasting Impact.
The makeshift roof is gone. A proper roof now protects the house, creating a dry and safer space where she can sleep, cook and go about her everyday life without constantly worrying about rain coming through the ceiling or rats entering through the old structure.
It may seem like a small thing. But for the person living there, it changes something fundamental: the feeling of being able to close the door at night and know that you are protected.
For us, this is a powerful reminder of what responsible tourism can mean when it goes beyond words. Tourism is not only about hotels, flights and itineraries. It is also about the people and communities that make destinations what they are.
When Travel Creates Something That Remains
When travelers choose to visit Cuba, their journeys create opportunities for local guides, drivers, restaurants, accommodation providers, artisans, farmers and many others.
And sometimes, when travelers and tourism partners come together to support local initiatives, that impact can go even further.
One house will not change Cuba. But it can change one person’s everyday life.
That is why we believe tourism can — and should — create value beyond the journey itself.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this project possible, especially the travelers and partners who supported the fundraising initiative and our clients at Be Somewhere Sunny.
